Fact: Candida overgrowth is stubborn, and it can create one sorry mess of a health problem if not addressed and treated properly.
Around 80 million Americans – 70% of which are women – suffer from Candidiasis or candida overgrowth, not only affecting the vagina for women but also setting the stage for other health ailments.
“Millions of people are currently fighting a battle against a single-cell fungus they cannot see,” warns top natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola, saying that candida can indeed “quickly grow out of control” and usher in many health problems.
The Gory Truth about Candida
Belonging to a family of yeast called Candida albicans, the culprit fungus is normally a harmless part of the skin, intestines, and for women, the vagina. Dr. Mercola, however, points out that candida cells grow rapidly, and overconsumption of processed foods and sugar, certain prescription drugs, and illnesses can easily usher in yeast overgrowth.
Oral contraceptives and overuse of antibiotics, adds Dr. Mercola, also promote the growth of fungi and yeast, thus leading to the disease whose symptoms are so often overlooked by physicians.
Be Afraid of Too Much Yeast
Contrary to popular perception, vaginal yeast infections are not the only problems that candida overgrowth entails. Chronic fatigue, for instance, is also rooted in this condition.
Dr. Mercola explains that too much yeast weakens the intestine linings, allowing into your bloodstream the allergens and toxins that usually don’t leave your intestines. What follows is that you develop cravings for sugar and carbohydrates to satisfy the abnormal amounts of yeast in your intestine.
He adds that these cravings for sugar and grains create a double whammy. “The more sugar and grains you eat, the more the yeast grows out of control. Eventually, this will further weaken your intestinal lining and your immune system,” Dr. Mercola says.
Sometimes called dysbiosis, the imbalance in the intestines caused by candida overgrowth can lead to the following:
• Irritable bowel syndrome
• Food allergies
• Weight gain
• Chronic fatigue syndrome
Yeast, too, is seen as a causative factor in cancer.
Fighting Candida Overgrowth
Dr. Mercola suggests that you ditch the over-the-counter antifungal creams and pills and treat vaginal yeast infection naturally. He says, however, that prevention should always come before cure, and you should therefore look into changing your lifestyle first.
The following tips are seen effective in preventing candida overgrowth:
1. Eat the best diet – one that is rich in meats, chicken, eggs, vegetables, nuts and seeds, and healthy oils – and beg off from sugars and carbohydrate-rich foods. Exercise regularly, too.
2. Increase probiotics or good bacteria in your body.
3. Avoid certain medications (antibiotics, corticosteroids, and birth control pills) and exposure to chemicals.
4. Address emotional and psychological issues with tools like the Meridian Tapping Technique (MTT).
