The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) said that the recommended level of fluoride in drinking water will be reduced to 0.7 mg/L from the current range of 0.7 to 1.2 mg/L. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is also set to review the maximum amount of fluoride allowed, which will be used to determine the legal fluoride level in drinking water sources.
Natural health expert Dr. Joseph Mercola welcomes these developments, as these will significantly reduce fluoride exposure for many residents around the U.S. But Dr. Mercola and the Fluoride Action Network (FAN) believe that the DHHS can still do better.
Shocking Studies Expose the Fluoride Folly
Fluoride is added to drinking water and oral hygiene products because of its so-called “cavity-fighting” properties. But can this process be a waste of time and money? A study conducted by German researchers found that the protective layer formed when you apply fluoride to your teeth is a mere six nanometers thick. You need 10,000 of such layers to get a width the size of a strand of your hair, Dr. Mercola points out.
Recent studies provide overwhelming evidence that fluoride is a potent accumulative toxin that does more harm than good. And if you are to look into the rapidly rising levels of dental fluorosis, it’s no wonder why Dr. Mercola and FAN believe that the DHHS’ set limit is still too high.
Dental fluorosis is an irreversible condition caused by overexposure to fluoride during your teeth formation years. This causes extensive damage to and visible discoloration of the teeth.
A study published in the Journal of the American Dental Association showed that in young children, fluoride exposure from all sources — water, food, toothpaste, mouth rinse, or other products — contributes to dental fluorosis. The study also identified mixing powdered or liquid infant formula concentrate with fluoridated water as a factor increasing dental fluorosis risk, especially when done regularly.
Fluoride Toxicity: Brushing Away Mental and Physical Health
FAN director Dr. Paul Connett states that there are at least 23 studies from four different countries indicating that even moderate exposure to fluoride lowers IQ in children. But since most of the IQ studies have been unavailable in English, the National Research Council of the National Academies’ 2006 fluoride report contained only five of the available studies.
Other concerns focus on fluoride’s direct toxic effects on brain tissue (even at levels as low as 1 part per million). These effects include:
- Damage to your hippocampus and purkinje cells
- Decreased lipid content
- Fluoride accumulation in your pineal gland
- Formation of beta-amyloid plaques (the classic brain abnormality in Alzheimer’s disease)
- Impaired antioxidant defense systems
- Increased aluminum uptake
- Reduced lipid content
More than 100 animal studies dating back to the 1940s link fluoride to brain damage, says Dr. Connett.
Aside from affecting mental health, fluoride toxicity can lead to arthritis, bone cancer, damaged sperm, dementia, disrupted immune system, fractures, hyperactivity, increased infertility, and increased tumor and cancer rate.
Help Stop Water Fluoridation in North America
Dr. Mercola joined forces with Dr. Connett earlier this year to promote FAN’s game plan to end water fluoridation in Canada and the U.S.
The fluoride initiative will primarily focus on Canada, where 60 percent of the water supply is already non-fluoridated. Dr. Mercola and Dr. Connett believe that if the rest of Canada stops water fluoridation, the U.S. will follow suit. Stay informed and get involved.
